(When I get the tape of James Cameron's 'll finally have some company.) QOM (Quality of Mercy) has I've watched this episode over and over again. I was so lucky I was able to tape the episode when my local affiliate showed it for Let me just go on record and say I love the Outer Limits. My all time favorite episode from The Outer Limits was "Quality of Mercy", story written by Brad Wright. It is in fact Earth, and the mission is not only a failure, but the unleashing of the doomsday weapon on an already crippled humanity. In the closing scene, the bomb is released over what the crew believe to be the alien home-world. However, in true OL fashion, the aliens attack the ship and then use a few tricks (including impersonating a human they killed) to make the remaining crew believe they’re still on course. ![]() They send out a ship – The Light Brigade – on a one way mission to the Alien home planet and plan to use the device to break down the bonds that hold atoms together. In a desperate bid to turn to the tide, humanity builds a small number of doomsday bombs. The plot in a nutshell is that humanity is at war with an advanced alien race, and it’s not going well. The Light Brigade is an excellent example of all of the above. But it’s better that way, I mean things don’t always go the way you want them to in the real world, and if art is supposed to imitate life then this is the best possible way to do a show. That’s a rare thing, especially for an American Show. The episodes were dark tales, and whilst it would be true to say that many did end on (relatively) positive notes, there were just as many that concluded badly for all involved. The Outer Limits has to be one of the bleakest shows I’ve ever had the pleasure to watch. ![]()
